Half of Hong Kong
Poet: Tian Yuan
Translation: Jordan A. Y. Smith

Half reclines on mountains, cars cruising steep, twisted roads,
Half surrounded by ocean, ships drifting on ocean.

Half the tall buildings scramble for blue sky,
Half the cramped houses worry in shadows.

Half the passengers snoozing on city buses,
Half the subway arguments held in loud Cantonese voices.

Half luxury, half cheap,
Half smiles, half irritation.

Half the greasy rich people live in vacation homes,
Half the poor wear ragged clothes to sleep in rabbit hutches.

Half the temples choke the breath with drifting smoke of incense,
Half the church bells intone a resonance to wash hearts clean.

Half dictatorship, half democracy,
Half homeland, half foreign.

Half the yearning filled with despair,
Half the despair filled with yearning.

Half the Indians left their Bodhisattva in oblivion,
Half the Filipino maids left their children back home to play the role of mother.

Half its people are born and raised there,
Half its people came as immigrants or exiles.

Half its mother tongue bitterly homesick,
Half its accent heavy with the scent of butter.

Half its history dons western fashion,
Half its future cannot be guaranteed.

Half the signs done in drifting traditional characters,
Half the doorplates tangled English roots.
